5 Reasons You Should Try Drip Irrigation For Your Garden

     If you are anything like my family and have a large garden (or even a small garden for that matter) it requires a lot of water to upkeep. This in turn, creates high water bills and nobody wants that, right? I understand the importance of efficient and sustainable gardening which is how I discovered drip irrigation and it has been an absolute game changer for my garden! Not only does it save my time (which is important if you are a busy mom like me), but it also saves you money and improves your plants health. In this blog post, I am going to share with you the top 5 reasons you should give drip irrigation a try. So, let’s dive in!

1. Water Efficiency

      The main advantage of drip irrigation is its unmatched water efficiency. With drip irrigation, you are delivering water directly to the root zone of your plants, thus minimizing evaporation and runoff. This ensures that every drop of water has a purpose. With traditional watering methods such as sprinklers, you lose a large amount of water to evaporation and wind drift. Furthermore, watering plants from above can lead to surface runoff, especially in areas where the land is sloped. This results in wasted water and potential erosion issues later down the road. 

2. Cost Savings

     Because drip irrigation systems water your plants slowly and precisely to only the areas that require it, they use 30-50% less water than traditional methods. This means more money in your pocket and less money down the drain. Additionally, because overwatering can lead to plant disease resulting in plant loss, drip irrigation saves you from potentially having to purchase replacement plants. 

3. Plant Health

      When moisture is given to your plants roots slowly and consistently, this encourages strong root development and increases overall plant health. Unlike with traditional watering methods that can create wet and dry cycles that leads to stressed plants. With drip irrigation, you are guaranteed to deliver a steady water supply that provides optimal soil moisture levels to your plants. By doing so, you are preventing root rot, fungal diseases, and other issues associated with over-watering and thus ensuring that your garden remains happy and healthy.

4. Time-Saving

     As mentioned above, drip irrigation systems not only save you money in terms of water usage but also your time! Once you install your drip system, it will practically run itself and all you have to do is sit back and watch your garden take off. This also means that if your family decides to go on a summer vacation, you can be rest assured that your garden will be happy the entire time you are away. Last year, my family and I went to the beach and when we returned a week later we were surprised to see how much our garden had grown. We even came home to a few ripe tomatoes, and what better way to end a vacation than coming home to fresh tomatoes?!

5. Eco-Friendly

As water becomes an increasingly precious resource, adopting sustainable gardening practices is essential for preserving our planet for future generations. Drip irrigation is a prime example of an eco-friendly solution that aligns with this goal. By conserving water, reducing runoff, and promoting plant health, drip systems contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally conscious approach to gardening. Types of Drip Irrigation Systems

     When it comes to drip irrigation, you will need to assess your garden’s needs and understand the different types of systems available so that you may pick the best fit for your garden. Below, we will go over 5 different types of drip irrigation systems and their unique features so that you will be well equipped to decide which one will benefit you the most. 

Surface Drip Irrigation Systems

     These systems are the most versatile as they can be adapted to accommodate gardens containing various plant types and garden layouts. This system is especially great for gardens that have many different plant types or an uneven topography. 

Subsurface Drip Irrigation Systems

   

     With subsurface irrigation systems, you will bury your irrigation tubing and emitters below the soil’s surface, directly within the root zone of the plants. This system is great for plants that are water sensitive and is ideal for arid climates. If you are aiming for a perfectly aesthetic garden, this may be a great option for you as well as the tubing will remain hidden from view below the soil surface. Before choosing this option, however, keep in mind that it can be a bit more difficult to install as it will require digging up sections of your garden. 

Temporary Drip Irrigation Systems

     Temporary drip irrigation systems are easy to install and can quickly be removed with little effort. These systems are ideal for those looking for a short term or seasonal solution. These systems are generally made of lightweight  materials and may have quick connect fittings. If you are in search of a temporary drip system that requires basically no set up at all, these irrigation hoses are a great option. You simply attach the hose to your faucet and weave the hose in between the rows of your garden and it’s just that simple. You can also connect multiple hoses together to cover more ground if needed.

Automated Drip Irrigation Systems

     Automated systems allow you to further enhance the efficiency of your system by integrating it with smart technology. These systems allow you to choose precise amounts of water that you want your garden to receive as well as specific times and intervals. By programming your system in such ways you can ensure that your plants receive consistent hydration without running the risk of overwatering. Some of these systems even include weather based controllers and soil moisture sensors that tailors your irrigation schedule to your current environmental conditions. 

Micro-Spray Irrigation Systems

     With traditional watering systems, water droplets are released. If you have delicate plants or seedlings that are still small these water droplets can be damaging to your plants. Micro-spray irrigation systems emit a fine mist that can easily be customized with various flow rates to accommodate different plants needs. These type of systems are especially ideal for small gardens, greenhouses, or raised beds.

     The world of drip irrigation systems is diverse, catering to a wide range of gardening needs and environments. By considering factors such as garden size, plant types, and local climate, you can select the ideal drip irrigation system that not only conserves water but also promotes healthy, thriving plants.

How to Install Drip Irrigation Systems

 

     The installation of your drip irrigation system is going to depend on your specific system but by following these step by step instructions, you should be able to go into the process with confidence. 

1. Planning and Design

Before you begin installing your system, it is important that you begin by assessing your garden. Look at the layout of your garden, the types of plants you have, and each plant’s watering requirements. Sketching a map of your garden, noting the location of each plant and any obstacles will help you get a better idea of what you are working with. Design your drip system by determining the most efficient route for your tubing and emitter placements. 

2. Gather Materials
Once you’ve completed drawing out your map, purchase all of the materials for your irrigation system. You can purchase a kit for this to make things easier as everything will be packaged together and you can ensure you have everything you need. If you choose to build your own you will need a timer, pressure regulator, filter, tubing, emitters, and appropriate fittings. Be sure to select materials or kits compatible with your specific system and garden layout.
3. Connect the Timer and Pressure Regulator
Now that you have all your materials, head out to your garden and attach your timer to the outdoor faucet. To the timer, connect your pressure regulator. Drip irrigation systems operate best at lower pressures. This will help conserve water and extend the life of your irrigation components.
4. Install the Filter
Before installing your mainline tubing to your pressure regulator, it is a good idea to place a filter to prevent debris and particles from clogging emitters. Many pressure regulators and drip irrigation kits come with built-in filters, but an additional filter may be necessary if you live in an area with poor water quality or hard water. You can test your water hardness with strips like these.
5. Lay the Mainline Tubing
Next is the fun part, roll out your mainline tubing along the planned route, cutting it to the appropriate length. Secure the tubing in place using stakes or wire pins, making sure not to kink or bend the tubing excessively. If you are using a subsurface irrigation system, you will need to dig out the path prior to placing down your tubing.
6. Attach Emitters
Make sure to place your emitters near the base of each plant, this will ensure that the root zones are adequately covered. For larger plants or trees, multiple emitters may be necessary. Secure emitters to the mainline tubing using appropriate fittings, such as tees or elbows.
7. Flush the System
Before activating your drip irrigation system, flush it to remove any debris or particles that may have accumulated during installation. You can do this by opening the system’s end cap and allowing the water to flow freely for several minutes.
8. Program the Timer
Set the watering schedule according to your garden’s unique requirements. Most timers offer flexible programming options, allowing you to tailor irrigation intervals and durations to each plant’s needs.
